The Story Behind Your Woven Labels
Weaving is one of the oldest crafts in human history. Even the ancient Egyptians used this technique. However, the history of our cotton label production in Dortmund does not date back quite that far. In 1986, we began producing cotton labels in cooperation with the weaving mill Willy Duisberg GmbH in Wuppertal. In 2019, we relocated the historic looms to Dortmund with great effort in order to preserve this valuable heritage of ribbon weaving.
There is a special reason why we took on this effort:
These historic looms are no longer manufactured today. They are the foundation of the only weaving technique
that makes it possible to weave a label from 100 % pure cotton so finely that it is both wafer-thin and features
two genuine, woven soft edges.
No modern production method achieves such a high-quality result. To reach this level of perfection every day,
we have developed extensive expert know-how over many years. Each loom requires daily, skilled maintenance and
a great deal of sensitivity and precision.
Historic Weaving Art Reprogrammed
Your cotton labels are woven in a classic plain weave on so-called Jacquard looms. This technique was invented in 1806 and was originally controlled laboriously using punched cardboard cards. We have taken it one step further: To make the classic shuttle weaving technique usable for today, we have equipped the looms with electronic control systems.
These serve as a digital interface between your online design and the mechanics of the looms. This software enables us to transfer your design, created in the configurator, directly and automatically to the historic machinery. Where new punch cards once had to be created for every pattern, our digital control system now ensures that your individual designs are woven with precision.

Can cotton labels be applied without sewing?
Yes, our Cottonera Classic labels with iron-on backing can be applied easily without sewing and will stay securely attached to your textiles even after frequent washing. Simply select in the configurator the menu section "Size and Fixture" and the option "Iron-on".
How can I prevent my cotton labels from fraying?
The usual method is to sew the labels on with folded ends so that the edges are protected inside. Our tip: Choose the option "Iron-on" in the configurator. The edges are sealed directly during production, which prevents fraying and makes handling easier for you.
